Remote Doesn’t Have To Mean Out of Reach

At First 5 Minutes, we are committed to ensuring that emergency preparedness and training are not limited to urban areas and Central Business Districts.
Recently, this commitment took our team to some remote and scenic locations in Australia, the Torres Strait Islands, which included visits to Ugar, Erub, and Masig islands, with additional stops at Mabuiag, Badu, and Moa islands. We provided Emergency Training in the Torres Strait, covering topics from emergency response skills to evacuation protocols, and working closely with local councils and communities to ensure safety readiness.

Why Emergency Training in Remote Locations Matters

Emergency preparedness is essential, no matter where you are, but for communities on remote islands, this comes with it’s own unique challenges. It is important to consider that in isolated ares, emergency response times may be delayed, and evacuation routes limited. This is where it is critical to consider Remote Emergency Preparedness Training in remote locations like the Torres Strait. Through this training, we help communities to understand their safety risks and empower them to respond effectively where seconds matter.Remote emergency management training covers all of the basic skills and more. It is tailored specifically to the environment, logistics and community needs of the location.

What We Covered in Our Training Sessions

Our team had a packed schedule of emergency preparedness training in the Torres Strait, including at key facilities with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Here are some of the topics we provided training on:

  • Service Plan Training – Emergency Response and Skills Procedures

In this training, we covered essential safety actions to build core emergency response skills. This face-to-face training included drills to ensure participants mastered the skills needed to manage an emergency.

  • Service Plan Training – General Occupant Response

General Occupant Response is designed to ensure that all people, regardless of their role, understand how to react safely in an emergency. This training covers evacuation routes, alarms, and essential actions to ensure everyone is prepared.

  • Emergency Planning Committee (EPC) Meetings

In these meetings, we engaged with Local Emergency Committees to discuss emergency planning and response coordination. We provided guidance to assist in the review of emergency strategies to ensure emergency plans were thorough, complaint and were effective tailored to specific environmental needs.

  • Emergency Evacuation Exercises

Evacuation Exercises gave participants the opportunity to practise their training through several simulation evacuations which aim to equip participants to handle real emergencies.

Unique Challenges and Considerations in Remote Emergency Training

Delivering Emergency Management Training Australia-wide comes with its own unique challenges, specifically in accessibility, geographically and the infrastructure. Some of the unique considerations for emergency preparedness in remote locations are:

  • Limited Access to Resources:

In urban areas, we have ready access to fire services, medical aid, and backup resources. On remote islands, however, there can be limited options. Training is critical as local people are often the first (and sometimes the only) responders in times of crisis.

  • Environmental Hazards:

Unique risks exist in terms of environmental hazarads. Island and coastal locations are prone to extreme weather events, such as tropical storms, high winds and flooding. These weather conditions need to be considered and addressed through site-specific guidance and emergency preparedness training.

  • Customised Evacuation Plans:

In remote locations, we need to ensure we have considered strategies which consider the transportation options and routes available. Evacuation plans need to be designed to factor in environmental and geographical constraints.
